the mouths of babes

My friend Liza recently started volunteering as adult supervision in the children’s room at the California Academy of Sciences. She reports seeing a small boy set up a restaurant at which stuffed animals could eat, complete with a row of chairs where animals could wait for their tables. No question this child is being raised in San Francisco. Maybe even more indicative was the small girl who went around carrying a plush octopus on a plate. But the kid who filled the play kitchen’s stockpot with a possum, a raccoon, and two squirrels, “just like Daddy does”–no idea where that one came from.
